WHY YOU

Hurricane Katrina devastated the city of New Orleans in 2005. One of the iconic symbols of that wonderful American city is the Superdome which suffered significant structural damage. Local, State and Federal agencies worked together to rebuild that magnificent city. The Superdome was refurbished and open to sporting events thirteen months later.

Imagine if the local, state, and federal agencies refused to coordinate their efforts and instead relied on small teams of people to travel into the city. Imagine that in the dark Superdome, 2,000 people a day went into the facility with their flashlights and supplies. They lived in the building for a week before returning to their homes. Every week there were 14,000 people somewhere in the facility living, breathing, and trying to restore light. But they all walked around in isolation. They went to their randomly chosen area and made cosmetic improvements to the building. Some replaced a sink, some painted a wall, and others collected trash. When they left, they took their lights and supplies with them.

Maybe a week later, a month later or never another group of people came into the Super Dome, went to another randomly chosen area and did the exact same thing. They never made any improvements to the previous groups work and, in some cases, they repainted the same wall on trip after trip.

It is easy to understand that a year later, the Superdome would not be game ready. Ten years later, it would probably still be unlit and none of the efforts from the workers would leave few signs of progress.

That is what is going on in Haiti. People are doing amazing things for the residents of Haiti. It has been ten years since the nation suffered from a massive earthquake. But sadly, Haiti is essentially in the exact same place they were five minutes after the earthquake dust settled.

Sou Vizyon exists to change the narrative by asking that you coordinate with other groups. Back to the Superdome metaphor, tell others where exactly you go in the Superdome. We ask that when it makes sense, you leave your paint brush, tools or your flashlight for the next group. Because the next group knows what is there, they will have the confidence to bring another or different batch of supplies. And they will leave their supplies with confidence because they have already coordinated with the next group. It is a simple, self-replicating process that works because all of the planning happens here.

Then that locker room, hallway, section of seats or 50-yard line will begin to see real change. That real change will be seen by others working on the other side of the arena. It will be seen by the local Haitians and they will begin to have confidence that real change is happening. Collectively, together we change the tide of momentum within a village, town, neighborhood and home. Collectively our circle will grow as more groups join the collaborative process.

One day, every group will be instructed to leave a flashlight or candle on the 50-yard line. One by one, you will leave your light at a very specific location. Together you will transform a single light into a focused, intensely bright laser beam of LOVE that shines as a beacon to the world that together we can achieve what is impossible individually.

WHY HER

This picture was taken in 2016 by Jacqui Ranson in Haiti. Jacqui is the director of the non-profit Heart of the Mountain Mission.  I do not know this girl’s name. I do not know where she lives. I do not know if she is even still alive.

I do know that her face confirms her emotions. It reveals her pain. It is a moment caught in time of a person who was born into a trauma filled life.

Her face is a mirror that betrays our emotions. I have failed her. You have failed her. We have failed her.

You might say that you spent your money on a mission trip. You might say that you have prayed for her.

The fact is that her life is unchanged.

Join me and others and together we can make real change and give this young lady’s future children hope!
